Humility, Detachment and Love

The three necessary virtues for contemplative prayer

Introduction

St. Teresa of Avila wrote repeatedly on the importance of humility, detachment and love as the groundwork for contemplative prayer.

In fact, I believe that these virtues are crucial for living a good Christian life. In addition, it is likely that the absence of any of these virtues lead to an increase in perceived suffering.

Much of life’s perceived problems arise from the lack of either humility, detachment, love or a combination of the three.

Humility is the Bedrock

Humility is so important because it forms the bedrock of our relationship with God the Father.

Christianity is essentially the story of God’s love and pursuit of us.

Consider the Primacy of Grace. Everything good in us comes from our Lord. Without God’s grace, we cannot even draw one breathe or conjure a positive thought for our brethren.

By extension, if we live a Holy life free of mortal sin, it is because of God’s mercy and there is no reason to feel superior to brothers still caught in mortal sin. In fact, we should feel…
