“So submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you of two minds.” (James 4:7–8)

Introduction

I am currently reading the book “Mental Illness or Demonisation” by Dr. Leslie Lim and Douglas Koh.

Dr. Leslie Lim, is as Christian Protestant Psychiatrist who writes about the difference between mental illness and demonisation. His chief reference material is the Bible, in particular the biblical stories on demonic oppression and/or possession with the bible (e.g. The Gerasene Demoniac in Luke 8:26–36).

In the book, he categorically stated that those who self harm are likely to be demonised.

“Persons who habitually harm themselves are under the influence of Satan.” (p. 114)

Interestingly, after reading the book, it got me thinking — What is the difference between mortification and self harm? How can the former lead to sanctification and the latter be a clear sign of demonisation? It is just so conflicting.
