Once upon a time, there was a kind old servant who worked for a cruel master.

He secretly took the leftovers from his master’s table and fed them to the beggars sitting outside the master’s house.

One day, he was caught in his act.

His master was furious, “How dare you commit such an indecent act! Don’t you know that by doing so, you will only attract more beggars to my doorstep? You are making my house a house of beggars. I will make an example out of you!”

With that, he broke the servant’s legs and made him sit outside the house as a beggar.

After the incident, none of the remaining servants dared to offer food to the poor.

Many years on, the beggar died and went to heaven.

At the gates of heaven, he met an Angel.

The Angel asked him, “When you were sitting as a beggar outside the house, you received many acts of kindness, of which was most memorable?”

The beggar replied, “Well, there was this little girl, not older than 7 from the nearby orphanage. She would visit me on some mornings and play with me as if I was an ordinary and respectable man. I really enjoyed having her around.”
